ELECTIVE COURSES
Art I:
This course is a general analysis of visual art. Students will study shape, space, value, natural size and color exploration as it applies to drawing. Other methods include sculpture and collage. Fee required. 

Art II:
This course will extend knowledge of elements of design. Specific attention will be paid to composition as principles of design are utilized to learn to use space well. Students will be allowed greater freedom in design choice, use new mediums and work in large formats. New mediums will include prismacolor, charcoal, acrylic paint, ink and mirror etching. Fee required. Successful completion of Art I is required. 

Adv Art:
This course is designed for those students who enjoy art and art related subjects. Students will work more independently in new areas including mola, printmaking, and t-shirt design. Other mediums may include pen and ink, stain glass and prismacolor as time and needs allow. Fee required.

Ceramics I:
This course will cover all aspects of clay including slabbing, coiling, pinching, sculpture and wheel-thrown pottery. Students will learn various concepts dealing with the techniques of firing and glazing pottery. Fee required.

Ceramics II:
This course will cover all aspects of Ceramics I and will expand on the different forms of each area of clay including: slabbing, coiling, pinching, sculpture and wheel-thrown pottery. This course is for students with a desire to go beyond simple construction of forms to more involved assignments. Prerequisite: successful completion of Ceramics I.  Fee required.

Ceramics III:
This course is designed for those students who enjoy ceramics. In this class students will select more advanced projects. there will be more involved assignments. Prerequisite: successful completion of Ceramics II. Fee required.

Musical Theater:
This course will develop skills in pantomime, storytelling, monologues, scene building, improvisation, and performance styles. The focus is on memorization and performance; written work is required including: character analysis, and play analysis. A live performance of a play must be attended during the semester and students must read one play on their own. Fee required.

Musical Theater Adv.:
This course is designed to build upon the basics learned in Music Theater I. Units of study include characterization, play analysis, script adaptation, reader's theater and performance workshop. During second semester students are involved in the production of the school musical. Fee required.

Intermediate Choir (no audition):
This full year un-auditioned class focuses on improving vocal talents and abilities. This choir will perform at evening school concerts and have the opportunity to perform at solo/ensemble festival. Fee required.

Advanced Choir (audition only):
This is a full year auditioned choir that performs more difficult music than the other choral groups. This choir performs the National Anthem at assemblies, as well as evening cone concerts, district choir festival, state honor choir and solo/ensemble festival. Fee required.

SSA Choir Advanced (audition only):
This is an auditioned show choir for girls that will learn dance movements to perform with songs. Students advance in vocal technique and performing skills. This choir will perform at evening cone concerts, district choir festival and solo/ensemble festival. Fee required.

Beginning Band:
This course is an introduction to musical performance by learning to play the Flute, Clarinet, Saxophone, Oboe or Bassoon, Trumpet, French Horn, Trombone, Baritone or Tuba. Students will improve their teamwork, memory skills, self confidence, concentration and poise. Fee required.

Intermediate Band:
This course requires one year of playing experience. Music theory, history and performance techniques will be presented in a fun and interesting manner. Required: Quarterly evening performances and 2.5 hours of weekly practice. Fee required.

Advanced Band:
This course requires two years playing experience. Note reading skills are necessary to succeed in this class. Required: Quarterly evening performances, extra performances as needed and 2.5 hours of weekly practice. Fee required.

Beginning Guitar:
This course is designed for students wishing to begin learning guitar. Music theory, performance techniques, teamwork and memory skills will be taught. Standard music notation, guitar tablature and chords will be covered. Fee required.

Beginning Percussion:
This course is designed for the student to learn the basics of playing percussion instruments. Another musical instrument  of your choice will be required as well. Music theory, reading notes, performance techniques, teamwork and memory skills will be taught. Fee required.

Jazz Band:
This course is audition only and requires one to two years experience on instrument and proficiency on reading notes and rhythms. All genres of jazz will be covered. Performance, attendance and Jazz Festival are required. Fee required. 

Beginning Orchestra:
This course is an introduction 
Beginning SA choir (girls):
This is a half-year class for young ladies with no previous vocal experience. Students will learn music notation, vocabulary, basic music reading skills and history. Unison and 2-part singing is explored. Fee required.

Advanced Orchestra:
This course recommends on year of musical experience. Viola, Violin, Cello and Bass instruments can be rented from the Music Department. Fee required.

Spanish I:
Students will develop skills in listening comprehension, speaking, reading, writing and cultural awareness in Spanish.

Spanish II:
Students will continue to develop skills in listening comprehension, speaking, reading, writing and cultural awareness in Spanish. Prerequisite: Successful completion of Spanish I.

Spanish III:
Students will enhance their skills in listening comprehension, speaking, reading, writing and cultural awareness of Spanish. Prerequisite: Successful completion of Spanish II.

German I:
Students will develop skills in listening comprehension, speaking, reading, writing and cultural awareness in Spanish.

German II:
Students will continue to develop skills in listening comprehension, speaking, reading writing and cultural awareness in German. Prerequisite: Successful completion of German I.

German III:
Students will enhance their skills in listening comprehension, speaking, reading, writing and cultural awareness in German Prerequisite: successful completion of German II.

Read Skills:
This course is designed to help students increase reading skills and develop a personal appreciation for reading. Reading selections will be chosen to appeal to young readers from a wide variety of authors.

Read for Enjoyment:
Students will enjoy reading books from different genres and participate in class discussions.

Creative Writing:
This course is designed to teach various forms of creative writing while improving writing according to the six traits which will encourage a positive attitude toward writing and reading. The course will be divided into several parts. Poetry, short stories, creative nonfiction and commercial writing are some of the genres that will be covered.

Computer Tech:
This course will cover the basics of hardware, operating systems and computer ethics. We'll explore word processing, spreadsheets and presentation software. We'll look at e-mail, living online and we spend time learning to effectively search the internet.

Exploring Computer Science:
This class focuses on the concepts of computational thinking, problem solving and programming with problems that are relevant to the lives of today's students. ECS is not a class for computer nerds, it's for everyone. You do not need programming skills.

Explore Business & Marketing:
Students in this class will learn the basics of business and marketing. Business concepts, communication, entrepreneurship, accounting and finance and leadership are all taught in this computer based class. Careers in the Business and Marketing pathways are explored. Students will build an electronic portfolio that covers job applications, resumes, interviewing and presentation skills, creating advertising media and preparing basic income statements and balance sheets.

Sports Sewing:
This course introduces basic clothing construction techniques, clothing care, textiles information and consumer skills. Fee required.

Foods I:
This course will offer students the opportunity to learn how food relates to health and fitness. Subjects include nutrition, kitchen management and how food affects the body. Students will also take the Food Handler's Permit test. Fee required. 

Fitness & Conditioning (teacher recommended):
This course is offered to students who are seriously interested in improving their overall level of fitness. The course is designed to give students the opportunity to learn fitness concepts and conditioning techniques for obtaining physical fitness. Students will benefit from comprehensive weight training and cardiorespiratory endurance activities. This course includes both lecture and activity sessions. Approval from Coach Herzog is required. Fee required.

Construction Tech:
Taught in the shop and CAD lab. Students investigate careers, safe work practices, measuring, and construction design. Many tools and materials and costs will be used and discussed. Shop projects - display shelf, round top treasure chest, miniature foam house, welding, 3D CAD design, wood burning. Fee required.

Teen Living:
This course helps students understand and cope with personal, family and social challenges. Emphasis is place on communication, decision-making skills and building stable relationships with family and peers.
The course enables students to implement positive coping mechanisms and promotes understanding of self. it addresses issues that impact teenagers: self-concept, family and peer relationships, personal loss, dating and teenage pregnancy and child abuse. Emphasis is placed on students taking personal responsibility for life.

Manufacturing Tech:
Taught in the shop. Students learn to design products and turn raw materials into finished products using computers and shop equipment. Materials used include wood, plastics, and metal. Students learn safe work practices, do product design, make measurements, do manufacturing processes and learn free enterprise. Shop projects - marble climber machine, sliding game/book rack, checker/chess game box, welding, whistle, plastic picture holder, 3D CAD design, wood burning. Fee required.

Child Development:
This course provides students with an understanding of the aspects of human growth and development. In this class students will learn about different stages of development including conception/pregnancy, newborn, toddler and school-age. They will also learn age appropriate activities to do with children while taking care of them, as well as positive characteristics needed in parenting. Many activities and labs will be done in this class to help students understand how children develop. Taking the RealCare babies home is a requirement in this class. Fee required.

Transportation Energy:
Taught in the shop and CAD lab. Students investigate careers, safe work practices, current and future transportation systems and modes of travel. Existing and future energy sources and uses are explored and demonstrated. Shop projects - 3D CAD car design, dragster air cars, solar marshmallow toaster ovens, hovercraft transports, model engines, electric motors and magnets, magnetic levitation vehicles. Fee required.

ESL Study and ESL (teacher recommended):
This course is focused on helping student's acquire English language skills necessary for academic achievement and success.

Latinos in Action (teacher recommended):
This class is offered to students who are interested in gaining Service, Leadership and Teaching experience by tutoring local elementary school students and participating in other Service related activities. Students will also explore and share aspects of Hispanic and Latino culture. Students will be linked with elementary school teachers and will work cooperatively to assist younger students to advance their reading and writing skills. Students will be trained in effective teaching and tutoring strategies. Students will reflect and share their experiences in a group setting to further expand their learning experience. To qualify for this class students must have and maintain a 2.0 GPA and have satisfactory citizenship. *Bilingual skills preferred.

Release Time:
This course is not part of the public school program. This is a religion class and parent permission is required. No credit is given toward high school graduation for this course.

Project Lead the Way: Located at Two Rivers Campus - 12th street. This program provides students who are interested in the field of engineering or high tech careers, an opportunity to combine their math & science skills to various practical problem-solving applications. Students selected for this program meet at Roy High every morning to ride a bus to Two Rivers High School. After 2 class periods there the bus will drop them off at Roy Jr. High School. Must talk to counselor to apply for a spot in this class.

REQUIRED COURSES

Secondary Math 1:
The purpose of this class is to formalize and extend the mathematics that students learned in the middle grades. The critical areas deepen and extend understanding of linear relationships, by contrasting them with exponential phenomena and by applying linear models to data that exhibit a linear trend. Students will use properties and theorems involving congruent figures to deepen and extend understanding of geometric knowledge from prior grades. The final unit in the course ties together the algebraic and geometric ideas studied. 

Secondary Math 1 Honors:
Same as Secondary math 1, but with the beginning components of Pre-Calculus added. 

Earth Systems:
This course will involve study of ecology, oceanography, geology, meteorology, energy, and astronomy. This class integrates earth, physical, space and life science.

Physics: Science and Engineering:
This is an applied science course focusing on three major aspects; of physic; that of the motion of objects; the forces acting on those objects and the energy relationships between those forces. A unique course that focuses on the relationship of traditional physics concepts to four energy systems: mechanical fluid, electrical and thermal.

Agricultural Science:
In this class you will have an opportunity to learn about a variety of animals, domestic and wild, learn about making money, business and marketing of all types of agricultural products. Students will also have the opportunity to participate in a summer agricultural program and raise animals for the county fair, grow plants and start earning money. Fee required.

English 9:
This course reviews Language Arts mechanics and grammar as applied to students' own writing skills. Short stories and novels are read and analyzed to develop critical thinking skills. Emphasis is on  preparation for the world of work including major research paper. Students will write several types of expository, persuasive and descriptive pieces.

World Geography:
This course examines the people of the world, their cultures, and the complex relationships between people and their environments. land forms, locations, map readings are also studied. 

AP Human Geography:
This course will introduce students to the study of patterns and processes that have shaped human understanding, use and alteration of Earth's surface. Students learn to employ spatial concepts and landscape analysis to examine human socioeconomic organization and its environmental consequences. They also learn about the methods and tools geographers use in their research and applications. College credit may be earned upon successful completion of the AP final test. Fee required for the AP test. 

Participation Skills & Techniques:
This course offers students instruction in lifetime activities and fulfills .25 credit of PE requirements for high school graduation. Individual, dual and team sports activities are included, with the emphasis on activities offering lifelong participation opportunities.
