ELECTIVE COURSES
Art I:
This course is a general analysis of visual art. Students will study shape, space, value, natural size and color exploration as it applies to drawing. Other methods include sculpture and collage. Fee required. 

Art II:
This course will extend knowledge of elements of design. Specific attention will be paid to composition as principles of design are utilized to learn to use space well. Students will be allowed greater freedom in design choice, use new mediums and work in large formats. New mediums will include prismacolor, charcoal, acrylic paint, ink and mirror etching. Fee required. Successful completion of Art I is required. 

Beginning SA choir (girls):
This is a half-year class for young ladies with no previous vocal experience. Students will learn music notation, vocabulary, basic music reading skills and history. Unison and 2-part singing is explored. Fee required.

Beginning TB choir (boys):
This is a half-year class for young men with no previous vocal experience. Students will learn music notation and control of the voice as it progresses through vocal changes. Fee required. 

Beginning choir combined:
This is a full year class for students with no previous vocal experience. Students will learn music notation, vocabulary, basic music reading skills and history. Unison, 2-part and 3-part singing is explored. Fee required.

Beginning Band:
This course is an introduction to musical performance by learning to play the Flute, Clarinet, Saxophone, Oboe or Bassoon, Trumpet, French Horn, Trombone, Baritone or Tuba. Students will improve their teamwork, memory skills, self confidence, concentration and poise. Fee require. 

Beginning Guitar:
This course is designed for students wishing to begin learning guitar. Music theory, performance techniques, teamwork and memory skills will be taught. Standard music notation, guitar tablature and chords will be covered. Fee required.

Beginning Percussion:
This course is designed for the student to learn the basics of playing percussion instruments. Another musical instrument  of your choice will be required as well. Music theory, reading notes, performance techniques, teamwork and memory skills will be taught. Fee required. 

Beginning Orchestra:

Students will develop skills in listening comprehension, speaking, reading, writing and cultural awareness in Spanish.

Students will develop skills in listening comprehension, speaking, reading, writing and cultural awareness in Spanish.

Gateway DM & ST:
Design and Modeling - Students are taught in the shop and use 3D solid modeling software to learn the design process. They sketch ideas on paper, use computer software to create 3D models and a 3D printer to print out their design. Projects will also be made in the shop using basic shop equipment.
Science of Technology - Students will explore nanotechnology and applied physics. They will use what they learn to make projects in the shop and do physics labs. 
Projects - Penny hockey game, rubber band rocket cars, air powered dragster, roller coaster mania, ice cream, electric cars and more. Fee required.

Read 180 (teacher recommended):
This course is for students who struggle with reading on grade level and comprehension.

Read Skills:
This course is designed to help students increase reading skills and develop a personal appreciation for reading. Reading selections will be chosen to appeal to young readers from a wide variety of authors.

Read for Enjoyment:
Students will enjoy reading books from different genres and participate in class discussions.

Keyboard:
This course is designed to teach basic keyboarding skills. The goal is for students to learn the keyboard and type with good technique at 35 WPM. This course is highly recommended for 7th grade students.

Creative Writing:
This course is designed to teach various forms of creative writing while improving writing according to the six traits which will encourage a positive attitude toward writing and reading. The course will be divided into several parts. Poetry, short stories, creative nonfiction and commercial writing are some of the genres that will be covered.

ESL Study and ESL (teacher recommended):
This course is focused on helping student's acquire English language skills necessary for academic achievement and success.

REQUIRED COURSES

Math 7:
This course focuses on four critical areas: (1) developing understanding of and applying proportional relationships; (2) developing understanding of operations with rational numbers and working with expressions and linear equations; (3) solving problems involving scale drawings and informal geometric constructions, and working with two-and-three dimensional shapes to solve problems involving area, surface area, and volume; and (4) drawing inferences about populations based on samples. 

Math 7 Honors:
Same as Math 7 with additional depth and breadth on existing topics. 

Integrated Science 7:
This course focuses on the theme of structure. Physical, earth and life science content is integrated in this class. 

English 7:
This course emphasizes reading and writing. Short stories and novels are used to teach reading vocabulary and critical thinking skills, emphasizing the six traits on writing. Students will practice correct writing skills. 

Utah History:
This course is an introduction to diverse cultures, people and events in the historical/social development of Utah. 

College Career Awareness:
This course is designed as an exploration in three different areas: Family Consumer Science and Health Occupations; Industrial Technology and Agriculture; Business and Marketing. The students will spend 12 weeks in each of these areas. 

Beginning Fitness:
This course will help students develop lifetime attitudes toward physical activity and healthy lifestyles. Team sports, individual sports and lifetime knowledge of physical fitness will be stressed during this course.
